Disclaimer!

Two things to note going into this review. One, I have not yet read the ABC / Jon Steinberg B&TB script. There will be no apples to potentially-different-fruit comparisons. Two, the only familiarity I have with the 1987 Linda Hamilton / Ron Perlman CBS series that the CW version is a remake / reimagining of is a quick glance at Wikipedia.

Based on that Wikipedia entry, a whole heckuva lot is different about the 2012 Cooper & Levin version. The only things that really seem to remain are the leads' names. Catherine is our Beauty. Vincent is our Beast.

Catherine Chandler wanted to be a lawyer.

In 2003, she was working as a bar over the summer as she studied for the LSATs and one night, she left her car's vanity mirror open the whole shift. Her car's battery died, so her mother came to pick her up. They were attacked. Catherine's mother died. Catherine ran, and was chased. She was saved by... some creature. A beast. Of course, her psychologists tell her that description is just a trick her mind played on her because her attackers were "beasts."

It's nine years later. Catherine is unlucky in love, has a history of choosing jerks. And a jerk has just pulled her heart out and stomped on it (outside an Adele concert, no less!) Catherine is roommates with her younger sister, Heather (who, thanks to this being a premise pilot, is mostly just a sounding board/counterpoint to Catherine vis a vis her relationship with men, their father, etc... it's a good, fun, believable sisterly relationship and I'm sure in series we'd get to know Heather better). Catherine is also... a homicide detective.

That summer night in 2003 really did change her life.

Catherine and her partner Tess are brought in on the case of a murdered Vogue fashion editor, where the first piece of evidence is a mysterious fingerprint on the victim's clothes. Mysterious not because it's a fingerprint, but because it belongs to Specialist Vincent Koslow, MD, who died in Afghanistan in 2002.

Catherine explores this lead, trying to find people from Vincent's past. He was an ER resident before 9/11, then enlisted after... because his family died in the towers.

Now, I'll pause here. In general, I have a problem with using 9/11 in fiction. I know. It's a thing. We're over 10 years later. You can't just ignore it if you want to tell the truth. It changed a lot of people lives, maybe every American's life and however much further you care to extrapolate/globalize that, directly and indirectly. It's my issue and I have to get over it. But it's still an issue I feel I need to bring up, because I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of this kind of thing. My major problem, being an East Coaster who lived in an NYC commuter area, is when it's used for emotional exploitation (I refuse to see Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close). Thankfully, here it's simply part of a character's backstory.

Okay, back to the script and away from my baggage.

Catherine tracks one of Vincent's old friends (his last known roommate) down... at an abandoned chemical warehouse... and though Catherine and Tess are turned away, we find out Vincent is alive, living in the chemical warehouse, and is the "beast" who saved Catherine's life in 2003 (per a news clipping he's held onto).

What proceeds is a light, banter-y crime procedural with strong character elements. There's an investigation, the murder is solved (are you surprised?), Vincent and Catherine meet and have sexual tension... though I'm not sure if it's UST. The script gives no indication of what, exactly, this "beast" looks like. As far as I really know, he's fast and strong and reclusive and has some rage issues... but not incredibly inhuman (and there is no secret utopian underground society). So I'm kind of picturing a werewolf at this point and not some grotesque monster that needs to hide in the shadows. The backstory there is that he's been experimented on, so he's got some genetic mutations. There's a conspiracy/company (Muirfield) behind it, and he's trying to stay off their radar, but Catherine accidentally alerts them because Vincent (who tried to save the murder victim's life) left some trace DNA evidence that matches exactly to Catherine's mother's murder... and it's not entirely human.

CW needs to crack its version of a crime procedural (yes, yes, they have Supernatural). This may be it, with its mythical Gothic romance trappings. I won't pretend this is groundbreaking, but what it is... is enjoyable. I love the characters Cooper & Levin have created. There's a comfort and familiarity and breeziness to the way they talk and interact on the page and, ultimately, I think that's why a lot of people like the TV they like. Hopefully that translates to the screen.

Pilot Script Review - The Carrie Diaries

Remember that one time when Gossip Girl, at the height of its ratings and buzz (aka: season 2) tried to do a backdoor pilot about Lily Rhodes in the 1980s? Well, for some reason / many reasons, that didn't wind up happening. Now, three years later, CW is a changing network with new leadership, Gossip Girl is gasping for its last breath / apparently is getting one last season for some reason... and we have another 1980s-set teen drama that's a prequel to an iconic New York City-set series (that also happens to share two out of three words in its title with CW's lone, um, successful? show, The Vampire Diaries... so that will be fun and confusing if this is picked up... and before you jump down my throat, TVDers, please keep in mind that I think TVD has developed into one of the best network dramas on the air right now).

Where was I. Oh, right! Carrie Bradshaw.

I will say that, having sat through 94 Sex and the City episodes and 2 SATC movies (or, really, one movie and one horror show where depressingly materialistic women try to ignore that they're aging and throw everything that's bad about Western culture into the face of the Middle East), I could very, very clearly hear Carrie saying these lines (write Amy Harris did work on SATC), especially the abundant and theme-explicating voiceovers (which I'd ordinarily complain about... except that TCD is just following the SATC template). In fact, I heard Sarah Jessica Parker in my head while reading those lines. A very large part of me wonders if the show could get SJP to record the voiceovers like Kristen Bell does for/as Gossip Girl and Bob Saget does for How I Met Your Mother.

If you're a stickler for continuity... The Carrie Diaries is just a tad different than what was "established" in SATC (then again, SATC never really talked much about Carrie's backstory). So, try and forget anything you knew about Carrie. And that sound you hear is all of the gentlemen readers who are, somehow, still reading this review after the prior paragraph shrugging.

The year is 1984. Carrie Bradshaw is a sixteen-year old about to start the first day of a new year at high school. But there's a change... because her mother died of cancer three months ago. This year is different. Carrie's fourteen-year old younger sister, Dorrit, has reacted to the trauma by developing a pot habit and biting Carrie when they fight. Their father, Tom, is generally clueless to the fact that Carrie's mother always took her shopping for a new outfit for the first day of school, and so, being Carrie Bradshaw, Carrie Bradshaw is depressed and passive-agressive about this until Tom does the unthinkable, and opens the doors to his late wife's untouched closet for her to peruse.

Hey, it's 1984 and she's 16. I'm okay with her being materialistic in the Age of the Material Girl. The show isn't quite playing to the "isn't this ridiculous" tone of Clueless with it, but whatever.

Carrie lives in generally affluent suburban utopia somewhere in Connecticut. Sucks to be her, right? She has a smart, loyal friend who spent the summer interning in DC, Jill aka "The Mouse." Then there's Maggie, overtly sexy, who is the son of the chief of police / sheriff. Maggie is dating a very obviously in the closet (he says, looking back from 2012) boy, Walt. And so we have our core group of friends that are a close proximation but not exact copies of Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha. Being high school, there's a mean girl (the somewhat hilariously, somewhat laughably named Donna LaDonna) and her minions (The Jens). Maggie lost her virginity, The Mouse lost her virginity... but Carrie is still a virgin. There's a very frank discussion of what happens when a girl loses her virginity.

In walks Sebastian Kydd, the new boy in school. And he knows Carrie from two summers ago. And they kissed. But Donna LaDonna has her sights set on the fresh meat, too.

But then, a shocking twist! As Carrie is about to ask Sebastian out, she sees her dad in the school hallway, reminding her of when/how she found out about her mother, and she passes out. Tom and Carrie's guidance counselor develop a way to help Carrie get a new beginning: intern once a week in Manhattan at a law firm (because Carrie wants, at this point, to be a lawyer).

So, it's not quite Jane by Design, but you can kind of tell that's where it may be going, right?

Anyway, Carrie goes to Manhattan for the first time, and hates doing filing work at the firm. But she ripped her panty hose on the way to work, so took them off and, being the 1980s, receives a very stern talking to about that from what I assume is The Horrific Future Version of Joan Holloway. She's told to go the Century 21 to get a pair of hose during her lunch break, and when she walks in, she finds herself in "what will become her fashion mecca." There, she meets Larissa, a female style editor at Interview magazine, who basically sweeps Carrie along for a crazy, glamorous night in Manhattan that will set a template for Carrie's life 20 years later.

This section reminded me of that episode the The Simpsons where Homer becomes a famous artist for five seconds because he smashes a failed attempt at a backyard BBQ pit. "Carrie, this is everybody. Everybody, this is Carrie. That's Dominick, he's an artist who works with found objects and wax..." (this is a direct quote from TCD).

There is some actual conflict with her home life, because this magical night in Manhattan is happening on the same night as The New Beginnings dance at high school, where Carrie and Sebastian may become an item and/or do the nasty and she has a curfew (of midnight). Instead, Carrie pops her Manhattan cherry (*the script makes this thematic point, it's not me being crude*) and Donna gets Sebastian... for now. But Carrie has been changed forever.

This is a definite, "um, we'll see how it turns out." Combine the soap of teen drama, the overt sexual nature of SATC, and the challenges of a period piece... who knows. It seems to fit in what the CW's old wheelhouse was, under Dawn Ostroff. You don't want to completely alienate that audience by completely changing the nature of every series, but this seems more risque than risky. But maybe risque can pay off.

Pilot Script Review - Cult

Scripts like Cult are what I like to read. It's imaginative and ambitious, to say the least. Ambition and a distinct voice are what broadcast shows need if the networks want to stop ceding ground to cable and its supposed hands-off executives and creator/showrunners' creative license and freedom.

Which is not to say that Cult is going to work, mind you, as either a pilot or a series. I just like the fact that someone (Mark Pedowitz) picked something like this up to shoot. This was the third CW script I read and, IIRC, the first pickup made. When I read it (and I held off on reviews until I'd read all five of the dramas picked up so far), my first thought was "If Cult is the vision Mark Pedowitz has for the post-Dawn Ostroff CW, then things are really going to change on the netlet." Now having read and reviewed Mile High Medical and read The Carrie Diaries... well, let's just say that some bets are being hedged.

Cult is about as far away from Gossip Girl as you can imagine. It's a swing-for-the-fences kind of show. The thing about trying to hit a home run is (*note: I have no idea if this is actually true in baseball*) you're going to miss more often than if trying to just get a solid on-base hit.

Or something about a pop fly to left field? I don't know. Sports aren't really my thing.

Anyway, Cult is one of those shows that is either going to be a hit or a spectacular failure. These kinds of big idea shows tend to be one or the other, and for every Lost or Heroes, there's... every show that was spawned by the networks trying to make a compatible lead-out or get their own version of said hit.

But what is Cult? I'm still trying to answer that question. It's a show so darkly meta I don't quite know what to make of it, where obsession with television and television shows and the delusion that fiction might be bleeding into reality is, itself, the point. It kind of winks at you and says "it's just TV!" then asks, "but wait... is it?"

Cult is about a detective, Eric Collins, whose family has been kidnapped, he believes, by this really nefarious cult leader, Billy Grimm. But Billy's smart. He has minions, lots of minions. Brainwashed minions. They do his bidding, so his hands are clean. But our hero is sure that he's responsible. And, naturally he wants his family back.

But wait. That's just the plot of Cult, the television show within the show Cult. This show. Man, people are obsessed with it. It's kind of creepy, and it's got all of these audience-participation add-ons, online components, etc. It's the kind of show you watch with a group or people but no one is allowed to talk, or alone in a dark and you turn your cell phone off because god forbid someone calls you during it. It's the kind of show where even if you work on it, like go-fer Skye Yarrow, you don't know what's coming next. You've never met the boss, Steven Rae. The crew gets annoyed when they're told some small detail, like a graffiti symbol in the background, isn't right because, dammit, the smallest details are just that important because THE FANS WILL NOTICE. The network brass want to make the show more accessible, etc.

But, really, Cult is about Jeff Sefton, a shamed reporter trying to rebuild his reputation whose younger brother, Nate, is obsessed with the show Cult (and we're talking way beyond the obsession of, say, a Lost fan who wrote 4 8 15 16 23 42 on a chalkboard after Numbers aired in 2005... not that I'm admitting to anything...), who is scared for his life, believes that the show Cult is something more than just a show, and goes missing or, perhaps, has been murdered... leaving clues only Jeff can pick up on. Will Jeff jump down the rabbit hole for his brother? Can he believe that something more than a TV show is happening? Jeff's first attempt at finding the truth is to visit the set of the show, where he meets Skye, and eventually an unlikely partnership is forged between a skeptic and a believer.

Oh, and there are a helluva lot of other plots and characters (like meeting the actors who play the characters on the TV, a number of scenes from the show (which is, actually, kinda of arch/big), and more.

So... is your head spinning?

There are elements I don't love. I think that some of the crosses between the show-within-the-show perilously teeter from "thematic" to "redundant." What with the hero-detectives and their missing-maybe-murdered family members and such. But, again, that's the point. Some of the in-show marketing for the show-within-the-show is... well, let's just say that it's probably not how an actual marketing department would market anything.

I don't know if Cult is going to work, if it can find an audience, or if it can keep that audience hooked without confusing the crap out of everyone. But I'm excited to find out, and I want to know more. And that's really all any TV pilot script can ask.

Pilot Script Review - Mile High Medical

If you ever watched Grey's Anatomy (particularly the pilot) and thought "this is just too subtle for me" and "gosh, I wish Meredith had a lot more voiceover" and "that Meredith is just too put together, I wish she were more neurotic," then Mile High Medical is for you.

Emily Barnes was not a popular girl in high school. She was insecure and lacked confidence. Now she's a surgical intern starting her first year at Denver Memorial Hospital and she is still insecure and lacks confidence. So much so that she yells at a frizzy-haired high school girl who she kind of creepily watches before walking into her first day (because the high school is across the street from the hospital, naturally) because the girl called her a loser.

Honey. You're a mess.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for flawed characters. I prefer them, really. But Emily comes off as so needy and pathetic that it's a major problem for me (also a major problem: her pervasive voiceover where she spells out her thoughts and/or the subtext of everything, i.e. "He's touching you. Do not spaz out. Do not. Spaz. Out" or, when a patient starts to code she yells "I need a doctor!" is told she is a doctor, and then thinks "A real doctor! Get a real doctor!" WE GET IT). Her one saving grace is her super ability to have bedside manner. But it doesn't really help her escape the bottomless pitiable pit she's jumped into. And this is the show's lead?

The show seems to make the point that we don't grow up. We are all the children/teenagers/whatever we always were, just trying to ignore the fact that we're older and still the same. I get it. I just don't want to watch it.

The other interns:

- Cassandra Kopelson. She's the mean girl who made Emily's high school life hell and just happens to also be starting the internship program. Neither Emily nor Cassandra seem to be able to let certain elements of high school go. Tell me if you've heard this one before... hospitals are like high school. Seriously. Seriously! Pretty sure the hospital departments as different high school cliques was in the Grey's pilot (even if the various departments were labelled differently). Seriously. But that phrase is repeated so often and so verbatim that I actually think Denver Memorial is more akin to kindergarten than high school. Now, of course, Cassandra has some hidden damage that Emily wasn't aware of... but she's still that mean girl you wished would get run over by a bus. And wouldn't you know it, she seems to be romantic rivals with Emily for...

- Will Rider. Charming, went to med school with Emily. Emily spends approximately every waking moment lusting after him, and even has a heavy-handed metaphor-patient in the form of a 12-year old girl who talking about Twilight (hmmm, maybe Emily is cut from the same cloth as Bella... that would explain some of my frustration with her) is also dealing with the issue of being too worried about rejection to ask the cute boy out. It goes better for the patient than it does for Emily, who overshares in her startling confession to Will, and then is treated to the most on-the-nose rejection I think I've ever seen: "I'm so sorry. I just don't see you like that. But I'm so touched by what you said, I really am. And I hope that we can still be friends, because I really value your friendship." I have no doubt that passage has been uttered in real life. But, come on. That's the first draft cardboard dialogue block you write when you just need to power through the vomit draft and you're going to come back and write something more specific to the character and not nearly so cut-and-dry.

- Tyra Granger, who has very little to do in the pilot except explicitly tell Emily on the first moment of their meeting that she is the Chief of Surgery's daughter and a lesbian. Which would be fine if Tyra were at all presented as out-and-proud (it turns out she isn't actually out to her dad). She kind of disappears (since she and Emily don't share a medical case in the pilot). The Chief, for his part, has a long-winded speech and also basically disappears

Then there's the interns' resident, Micah, who we're clearly supposed to believe will eventually be Emily's love interest post-Will rejection. His mother is dying of pancreatic cancer. And, of course, the hard-nosed, famous-within-the-world-of-the-story attending surgeon Gina, who has terrible bedside manner and whom Emily must prove herself to if she hopes to survive.

You know what this show is. Interns struggling to survive (although if I read the times indicated on the slug lines correctly, the first shift was a whopping 10 hours from 8AM to 6PM... and I totally buy that a patient who needs her heart reconstructed can be closed up and awake and texting 65 minutes later, so, thanks for the specificity). Being competitors, friends, rivals, and lovers. And patients and surgeries reflecting on the characters' personal journeys.

I'm not saying the Grey's formula can't be done ever again, but... come on. Who are we kidding with this one, folks. At least try and make it a little different.

Pilot Read 2012 Disclaimer

GENERAL DISCLAIMER

I only review drama scripts. I'm a drama writer and so, when there are already 1000 things I'm behind on reading/writing/doing, I don't have the time to read comedy scripts. Sorry.

All pilot script reviews will, when available, give the draft date of the script. I can't recall a single instance of a final shooting script for pilots being circulated in the industry over the last few years since I've been doing script reviews. Often, scripts are way too long and need significant cuts to get down to a target run time. Plus... studios and networks give notes. So, it's important to keep in mind that THINGS CAN CHANGE, and often do (but not too often for the better).

And things can often turn out much better on screen after casting (I try to read/review without casting in mind and ideally before casting is done) and filming and editing happen that I am simply too shortsighted and ill-visioned to see or appreciate at the script stage.

It's also very important to keep in mind that these are my opinions. I have a... particular taste in what I watch and enjoy. It may not be yours. In fact, it probably isn't. You may disagree with me (whether you've read the script or not). That's okay.

I don't like writing reviews of bad material. I wish every script could be the best script I've ever read, and that's the attitude I try and go into every script with. I want to be wowed, either by concept or character or even a line or a moment that just lands and hits me hard. I want to be jealous that someone else wrote this, and I didn't. There are plenty of reasons I may dislike a script, and they'll probably be enumerated in individual reviews.

If you disagree with me and you haven't actually read the script, let's just accept that it's a waste of mutual time for you to lambaste my opinion.

If you have read the script and disagree, I'm game for a discussion. Especially when I dislike something, I'm always more than happy to be proven wrong by the finished product or by someone else's point of view.

There are spoilers inherent in writing reviews. After all, how can I give an opinion if I can't talk about what I'm opining? When I feel something is a GIANT TWIST however, I will do my best to not spoil it, especially twists that come towards the end of a script.

Finally, if you are the writer of a project that I have, let's say, ripped to shreds, I hope you don't take it as a personal attack (and I'll do my best to not make any personal attacks like "sometimes you have to wonder how X got an agent," etc). Hey, you're the one who got a pilot picked up to be produced by a broadcast network, right?

Revenge Update: An Ill-Timed Stinker

So here I was, all prepared to issue a "mea culpa" about Revenge, which, until last night, was proving a remarkably delicious, confectionery treat to top off my Wednesday evenings.

I loved the pilot script, thought the pilot was lacking (and potentially very confusing to people who hadn't read the script).

Future episodes played better, almost a procedural of Emily Vancamp-Thorne-Walker taking REVENGE on someone through sometimes obvious, sometimes underhanded methods, all the while espousing the world's most monotonous theme-anviling voiceover and smirking and giving shifty-dead eyes that no one seemed to notice.

Also Madeline Stowe wears the shit out of every dress.

Also DEAR GOD Josh Bowman (Daniel) is gorgeous. And HOW AWESOME is Emily that she's so cold and calculating and amoral that she is SLEEPING WITH HOT DANIEL while systematically taking REVENGE (she really does need to shout that word, Sideshow Bob style, after every sentence... "Ah, Kettle chips. The perfect sidedish for... REVENGE!") on his family, and possibly on him.

Also the character they introduced as Daniel's college friend (who is, obviously, secretly poor—QUELLE HORREUR—and, I believe "super secretly" evil gay) is summering in the Hamptons with the Graysons in The Biggest House Ever, yet shares a bedroom and shower with Hot Daniel. RIDICULOUS.

Also what the hell is Connor Paolo's accent, given that neither his fictional father nor his fictional older brother speak with anything remotely like it?

The show, clearly, has so much going for it in the campy guilty pleasure department.

But, still, a big problem I've been having with the show is that there is very little actual drama to it. Emily (and pouty kind of sidekick Nolan) have everything worked out (they have had 8 years to prepare for it since she got out of juvie/whatever/backstory/zzzzzz) that it's all going marvelously flawlessly. Y'know what that means? It means it's boring, or at least more boring that it could be.

Real drama happens when characters have their backs against the wall and have to get out of sticky situations.

I was really excited for last night's episode based on the previews (that'll learn me, especially given every other promo for the show has some version of Madeline Stowe saying "I know your secret" but it turns out to be a dream and/or she's talking to her husband and/or vamping to some member of her staff of thousands) because things, finally, seemed to not be going according to plan when Emily blustered that Lydia (Madeline Stowe's ex-friend who was sleeping with Rich Dad in the pilot) FALLING TO HER COMA (ugh, really, she's not dead? Really? I'm fine that you're going to bring Amber Valetta back, but at least do it as an evil septuplet... because you know she's going to wake up from the coma with explosive amnesia) was not part of her plan.

But things kind of went along swimmingly, anyway. So last night's episode was a big ol' letdown.

Emily did not really seem to take REVENGE on anyone last night. There was no magnificent takedown (unless you count Secret Gay drugging Hot Daniel, then failing to seal the deal when he took Daniel upstairs to "sleep it off" in the poor family's / other love interest's apartment above the bar... and what was that montage scene at the end with Jack looking at Daniel when he came home from the party and the bar was already closed? Was he proud that Daniel worked himself so hard through his double-shift that he was taking a nap? Was he angry? Was he told that Daniel mysteriously disappeared after his enabling, secretly gay, secretly poor best friend drugged him? WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING????).

I didn't realize how much I was craving the procedural-ish element of the show until the show didn't give it to me. Emily didn't want anything last night. She wasn't even really cleaning up the mess Nolan made-ish for her. She was just... dating. Which is a problem, but I respected her when she was an amoral whore slutting it up for with rich, hot guy while scheming REVENGE. But according to next week's promo (Travis, what did you just say? Why have you learned NOTHING), she says she's falling in love with him? I realize this is all part of her evil scheme... but it's so much more interesting/unique (JMHO) if she is really this cold, calculating bitch.

Meanwhile Hot Daniel's Secretly Poor, "Secretly Gay" Evil Best Friend is scheming to... what, exactly? He's already gotten the internship (and Wall Street internships are bank, yo, my younger brother made like $10K in a couple months when he did his years back). And, um, sorry, but when you bang your own head against a blue-painted telephone pole, you don't get a horizontal gash on your forehead. You get bruising. And a concussion. Meanwhile, Madeline Stowe's bodyguard? Security chief? New secret boyfriend after James Tupper was sent to jail and died? He's onto Emily. Thank god. Because this shit was gonna get real boring (despite all the WTF listed above) if there was no real noose-tightening going on.

Madeline Stowe did not get much to do last night. I mean, she stood on the veranda in a dress and was stoically angry and that was just about it. Eric Van Der Woodsen had more to do, and his plotline involved dipping his big toe into the Wall Street pond by using banker jargon, stealing, and learning a valuable lesson about the market value of lobster futures.

I don't know, guys. I just don't know. I'm so clearly, unexpectedly invested in this show. I want it to be horrible, yet good, which I realize is an almost impossible tightrope to walk, but the last few weeks have been so delicious and almost-dramatically satisfying, just like a good cotton candy puff piece of nothingness should be.

Although I might have just been in a bad mood because Happy Endings had what I thought was its worst episode ever (but, thankfully / paradoxically / go-figure-ally, its highest rated) immediately beforehand.

Really quick, because I haven't mentioned anything about this show and because the name of this blog still is, technically, "Travis Yanan Watches TV" and I suppose that I should, on occasion, prove I am still doing that...

I'm enjoying this show. Are you? It's easily the most interesting / intriguing of the new fall dramas that I've seen (I am not watching Starz's Boss, for some reason... but I've heard positive things), but with this fall's generally terrible network dramas, it would be with only Morena Baccarin's hilarious wig and nudity.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.

Claire Danes is awesome (even if I'm still waiting for anything to come of the fact that she's mentally imbalanced / has a mood disorder / is potentially bipolar but they haven't gone into it).

Also that spy-hooker got killed for her necklace.

That might be it.

I have hang-ups (also, I am watching as it airs, so this says nothing about anything that may be coming in future episodes).

The premise of the show, per the ads, is/was "the nation sees a hero, she sees a threat."

Yup. That's what the show is.

I'm waiting for it to be more. Because, right now, really the show is asking a yes or no question. Danes's character is either right about Damian Lewis's character (a Marine sergeant captured by a terrorist in 2003 and released / rescued / I can't remember in 2011) being turned or not.

So... there's that. And the show gives us little peeks that Danes's character doesn't get through her many (now disabled) super-spy-cameras (that were put everywhere in the Lewis/Baccarin home except the garage, sigh, blind spots due to having to not be caught in the act of spying) that seem to want us to think "yes, he is" because he now prays to Allah. ZOMG! I HAS A PREJUDICE.

But, yeah, if there doesn't wind up being some twist that takes the show beyond "yes or no" then I'm going to be disappointed.

Also, it only took four episodes for Danes's character to appropriate Jack Bauer's "THERE'S NO TIME" catchphrase.

I took a shot (ah, the good old days of 24-viewing-party-drinking-games).

But I worry.

Here's why. You're far too young-skewing for ABC's current audience, even the demo-friendly Modern Family.

See? One of these things is not like the other.

Happy Endings is a show about urban early-30somethings airing on a night of family comedies. When ABC sees what it has on its hands with Apartment 23 (FKA "The Bitch in Apartment 23"... which I personally loved for the improbably comedy dream team Krysten Ritter playing a bitch and James Van Der Beek playing himself... but did not love the straight woman lead character), also not a family comedy, maybe you two can go be together and have, hopefully, a long, hilarious run.

Year of Penny, suck it.

Not a ton to say here. Solid retention both from lead-in and throughout the hour (especially among older demos and teens... oddly just not in the 18-34 range!) Evidently a 1.3 A18-49 is going to be something for the CW to celebrate this season... but there is now a LOT riding on the next couple weeks for post-premiere retention with both Ringer and Secret Circle, not to mention Hart of Dixie now being the netlet's only shot at an immediate break-out success.

As I expected / postulated on Twitter, Up All Night's "solid" premiere following America's Got Talent's finale wasn't really so solid, given that steep 15-minute drop-off (and one can assume ratings continued to slide through the last 15 minutes, contributing to Free Agents' starting point). Personally liked it and hope it finds an audience at 8pm this Wednesday... but I wouldn't be surprised if sunk to low-2s (or below) next week as it has to self-start and the hour will (or all the pundits assume it will) be swamped by the X-Factor's premiere.

Not sure where the commercial loads were. Seems to act like the Nikita premiere from last season, 0.2 lower in each of the listed key demos (and 0.4 down in A50+, 1.0/2 vs 1.4/3), although Nikita had a far stronger lead-in with The Vampire Diaries (and Nikita fell in key demos versus that, while rising in older viewers) than Ringer had with 90210 (improving in every demo I see, only tying in T12-17 at 0.6/2). Always good for a series to not see huge decreases at the first 15 minute mark (people see what it's about then say "not for me") but this is, obviously, not a huge hit out of the box... and one where weeks two, three, and four will really tell the tale. Perhaps the two scheduled replays will help.

Plans for the 2011-2012 season

Hey all!

You may have noticed it's been a long, long time since I'd updated on things like ratings or crap I'm watching on the television machine, or what have you. Still in the throes of novel writing. It's an arduous, but rewarding process (that I'm happy to say / believe / hope that I'm improving on as I keep plugging away at this whole prose-writing)... and one that has been slowed down some by the Return of Day Job / End of Hiatus.

Anyway. Let's talk shop aka posting TV ratings.

Tonight kinda-sorta begins the roll-out of the 2011-2012 fall season with Ringer. It seems like final broadcast program averages do get out there without me having to type them up... which makes me happy. I will still provide 15-minute breakdowns of premiere episodes of new series, since I don't see those out there. So, look to here and twitter and wherever else decides to copy-and-paste to their own websites (and hopefully credit me).

Cable... at least until I'm done with this first draft phase of the novel, I'm still going to refrain from doing any cable ratings posting. I've been providing data to friends at http://www.thefutoncritic.com and will continue to do so, so check there for cable numbers.

I'll try to be better during the season, now that my busy, concentrated, laser-focus summer is done, with responding to twitter requests for specific show ratings / demo info in case they don't show up elsewhere.

The Battle of Two of My Favorite Scripts' Screeners - AWAKE and THE RIVER

THE RIVER (ABC) - One of my favorite scripts. Screener is about 6 minutes too long, so stuff will have to get cut for air. Also, VFX are not done, so it's a tad difficult to fully "judge" a pilot that seems fairly VFX-heavy. That's the pre-amble to a "hm, that didn't come off quite as well as I envisioned it in my head based on the script." I have absolutely no idea how this is a series (granted, that was a problem I had with the script, too, but it didn't seem like as big of a problem versus the "I'm so in love" of my reaction). And this is going to sound really petty, but the guy who plays the lead? He frightens me. Like, in a vaguely Skeletor way. I want him to eat something at craft services. This is a problem in that he's, I think, supposed to be the center of the ensemble (though Leslie Hope really seems to be that, for now). This is a very horror movie-esque concept (maybe that was the point of hiring a skeleton as the male lead?) and the execution keeps it very much in that genre... to the point of me wanting to scream at the characters "NO, DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR" and "YOU'RE BLEEDING, DON'T JUMP INTO THE AMAZON RIVER". Sigh. I hate being disappointed and I'm blind-faith chalking this up to it being long and incomplete and without fully realized music. Fingers crossed whatever airs midseason works better for me.

AWAKE (NBC) - Also one of my favorite scripts! Probably the favorite, from an intellectual level. And there's a lot of intellectual to what shows up on screen. If you'll recall the concept, this is a police character-cedural where the lead, Jason Isaacs' Michael Britten (in the script it was Mark... oh why oh why do things so important have to change? Damn you, clearances! LOL) lives in two worlds thanks to a car accident: one in which his wife died and one in which his teenage son died. These worlds are populated by different crimes, different detective partners, different psychologists, and slightly different color schemes (the son worlds is a bit bluer, the wife's world has a bit of an orange hue). You feel for this man, with people treading carefully around him and tiptoeing around things and both psychologists insisting in their different ways that their world is real and why the other world is fake. Things do spin out of control, or seem to, but surprisingly there was a somewhat staid emotionality to the whole thing. Not a ton of highs and lows, maybe because (even having read the script) there were times that I was thinking "wait, what world are we in?" I'm entirely convinced that this will be a problem for the general viewing public going forward, especially because Steve Harris's detective character (in one world, Britten's partner, in another worlds, just another detective) isn't kept entirely to the sidelines in the world where he isn't Britten's partner. It's easier with Wilmer Valderamma's dubiously-accented character, because in one world, he's Britten's partner and in the other world he's just a uniformed cop. There is some hint at a longer-arc plot (dealing with both worlds perhaps representing clues in a giant mental puzzle Britten has constructed for himself to either deal with his guilt about the car accident or figure out some greater truth / possible conspiracy mystery) that will definitely keep me coming back even if it's only a couple D-story runner beats, USA-style, per episode. I've also managed to convince myself that there's some third reality that will be revealed at the end of the first season where either Britten is in a coma and dealing with things there or there's some world where both loved ones have died... much like I convinced myself that Bob had a secret third wife or at the very least an evil septuplet that would've been revealed at the end of the first season of Kyle Killen's dearly/prematurely departed Lone Star.

PS - There was no reason to make this a "battle" and it really isn't... I just felt like rattling off a couple short reviews in one fell swoop.

PPS - Still really annoyed at the networks in general that this fall is (on the drama side) essentially devoid of anything I want to shout my adoration of from on high (yes, there are things I liked), while I can't wait for NBC's midseason for more of Smash and Awake.

Why The Killing Finale, Though Awful, Was Actually Insanely Smart

Shut up, I know.

Okay, that post title is slightly misleading because, much like the investigation through the season and even in the episode (on day thirteen), the finale of The Killing was stupid and I hated it (SHOCK!)

Like some, I started seeing the decline of quality in the show around episode three and then really began to lose interest a couple weeks later, but kept at it because, hey, it's AMC and because I did want to know who the eff killed Rosie Larsen (despite having no idea who she was). With the exception of the episode "Missing" two weeks ago, the season (and, for me, the series) was a jumbled mash up of grief-porn (the Larsens), rapidly vacillating political misfortunes and one-upmanship (Richmond), and a fearsome combination of terrible parenting (Linden) and terrible policework (Linden/Holder).

But all of that has already been said, and been said better (I particularly love Mo Ryan's rage-spiral diatribe).

Here's the thing that no one has said: the finale, and the choice to not solve the murder (because we collective conspiracy theorists known as mystery television viewers won't buy that Richmond dunit if there's falsified evidence and a shadowy, unseen person presumably driving the car Holder stepped into in the "shocking final five minutes"), was - in one very double-edged way - a stroke of genius from a business perspective.

For all the talk of "I'll never watch the show again" (which, again, I am part of... but, y'know, the vociferous echo chamber of TV criticism and of Twitter rarely actually translates to things like ratings), the show did its job in tantalizing viewers to come back and in demanding AMC pick it up for a second season.

If you still want to know who killed Rosie Larsen, supposedly the one thing that dragged us through the rain and muck of season one... GUESS WHAT? You have to tune in to season two.

AMC, in fact, has to pick up season two. Why? Because buying a whodunit that doesn't answer the initial whodunit question and selling it to your audience as a whodunit about that question... and then cancelling the show when the plan in place (that you knew about and, probably, should have demanded be changed, again, double-edged sword) offered no true resolution?

AMC was painted into a corner (by itself, I truly believe, because it didn't make a demand for closure per the above). It had to pick up a second season of The Killing.

So, there's controversy that's going to be a-brewing around the show. That doesn't necessarily translate into ratings... but I think that it will. Because, somewhere out there, a lot of people still want to know the answer to that damn question. Who killed Rosie Larsen?

It'd be a lot easier to stomach if the ride to the infuriating finale hadn't been an F5 tornado of awful, or if the show had given us ANY reason to want to watch it outside of answering the whodunit (i.e. Twin Peaks' insane quirkiness and Lynch-y-ness, or Veronica Mars' plucky heroine bringing us back to season two even though we found out who killed Lilly Kane).

My, probably terribly off-base, uneducated, blindly-hopeful guess for season two that, again, I'm not watching? The show actually becomes good. The infuriating finale is a ploy. The various out-of-left-field twists get paid off. The investigation truly takes off. And the people who decided to stick around find out who killed Rosie Larsen in a satisfying manner that doesn't let them off the hook for 9 months because the answer comes in the middle of the season and, hey, why not watch next week because the episode ends with the next murder mystery to cross Linden's desk, for her to over-identify with a victim we don't know and pursue in a convoluted way.

But it's just next week. You'll watch. You'll get sucked in. And you'll be annoyed all over again when the season (and, deservedly, series this go-around) ends with another "jaw dropping" cliffhanger that wasn't led up to or hinted at, at all.

Then again, maybe it was just awful and everyone involved is stupid and should be fired and, while collecting unemployment checks, create a time machine to go back and stop The Killing from ever happening.

Meanwhile, can I just say that if the stuff that had happened at the end of the season finale had happened at, say, episode 4? I might not be so pissed off, and I'd *certainly* be watching next week to see what happened.

Which, I guess, just highlights one of the key problems the show had, regardless of what you thought of the finale or the ending: terrible, terrible pacing. But, again, other people have ranted on that far better than I care to.

And, yes, I realize I'm about 36 hours late to the "rant about The Killing finale" party.

Pilot Screener Reviewlets - CW Dramas

- Hart of Dixie: some of the small town / southern quirkiness was, blissfully, leeched out between script and screen. It's still there, but BlueBell is now way more tolerable. The biggest problem here is Rachel Bilson. I love her to death, but, honey, I just don't buy you as a world class surgeon who doesn't have bedside manner. You exude bedside manner... at least of the candy striper variety. Just not, y'know... brilliant doctor. Putting that aside, especially because the show is about the soap and the town and not Summer Roberts, MD, there's a charm to this show that I, unexpectedly, might sample more of.

- Ringer: SMG is back. You're either going to watch it or not, you don't need to know my opinion. Stuff cut for time from the script, mostly in the immediate post-Siobhan disappearance stuff where Bridget first decides to try and become her twin sister. Long scenes became little visual shorthand, and it works. Love the use of mirrors throughout. It was a CBS show, as you all know... and as that it feels very different from everything else on CW. Older, a little more mature, a little less obsessed with romantic soap. I'm still intrigued. It's still a big buy that the identical twins were so estranged that Siobhan didn't tell her husband that Bridget even existed. But, y'know, that's the deal with premise pilots.

- Secret Circle: still a work in progress, if you ask me. I stand by my "I will see what the show is come episode 4" stance from the script review. There are a lot of characters, few of which really jump out, so hopefully, like in Vampire Diaries, they will claw their way to the forefront as we get to know them better. I like Britt Robertson (residual Life UneXpected feelings), who is really the only character we get a feel for... I'm not loving Thomas Dekker. I didn't feel the smoldering sexual tension you need between them (or between him and his character's actual girlfriend). There's a truly pretty, magical moment between their characters in the middle of the woods, when they make water droplets rise. Just gorgeous. The was also a lot cut from the script I read, particularly in the back half, and it results in a far better, open-ended semi-cliffhanger than the script had (where the circle of witches, like, came together and chanted around a bonfire or something, all their problems solved and personal issues put to bed, IIRC). I also have a bit of a fear that the show is just going to be a carbon copy of TVD, minus the danger inherent in vampires. It needs different tricks up its sleeve.

Not yet watched: Awakening, Cooper & Stone, Danni Lowinski, Heavenly (which I hear would have been picked up, except for the whole Ringer thing)

Pilot Screener Reviewlets - NBC Dramas

- 17th Precinct: this makes me sad, because I have an incredible affinity for many of the actors involved in various other projects (it's not just BSG alums). There's this INCREDIBLY awkward and unnecessary and dry opening saga-sell of "imagine if the world were based on magic instead of science" that REALLY makes the whole proceeding feel like Law & Order: Spectral Victims Unit. All of the silly/obvious "Lee Adama is having an affair with Gaius Baltar's wife" stuff was dropped (presumably for time). The biggest problem here is that in a world of magic without clearly set rules... anything is possible. Crime and murder investigations hinge on things that can be pulled out of a hat. Granted, a lot of the forensic science on other real-world-set procedural shows feels like magic. This world of magic needed to be the MacGuffin into a human story about the people who live in this world and the long-arc story of the Stoics (a group of terrorists who use science, not magic). Instead... magic feels like the only thing being offered up. This needed some reworking. It could've been something. It's not.

- Grimm: I had a terrible reaction to the script. It's not that bad, though I still think the main character is kind of a terrible detective. It just leaves me kind of cold. There's no reason why Nick had to stay in the dark about his lineage, and it's unexplained why his aunt allowed him to stay that way. It's also entirely arbitrary-feeling why he starts to see things. I'll probably even watch the second episode to see if the mythology deepens. The effects are good.

- The Playboy Club: no woman is going to watch this show. And, given that it's a broadcast show, it's not like there's even the promise of HBO-style nudity to attract men to it. The opening has a ton of flash, but the physicality of the accidental murder that takes place is terrible. I think the actress who plays Carol Lynn is terribly miscast. There are going to be a ton of Mad Men comparisons, of course, so here's what I'll say: YOU ARE NO JOAN HOLLOWAY. Basically, I think someone said "let's do a show set in the 1960s about playboy bunnies" and NBC bought it, then they said "oh, crap, there's no show here" so they added organized crime into it. The only part of the show I have any interest in following is the world of the secretly-lesbian bunny and her gay husband... but that's, y'know, not what the show is about, really. It's just a side story for one of the characters. It's not boring like Pan Am was, of the two 1963-set series, but it's not compelling.

- Prime Suspect: a character-cedural about the problems of being a female homicide detective in a precinct with a boys club feels very ten years ago. I don't mind Maria Bello as Jane. I just don't find this story to be particularly modern. It needed something more, a little zhuzh. Doesn't have it.

- Smash: hated the script. Thankfully, a lot of the seedier elements were taken out. The ending was changed SIGNIFICANTLY, which is welcome because it left a horrid taste in my mouth when I read it. There's even a cliffhanger, of sorts... you don't know who has been cast as Marilyn (in the script, it was a foregone conclusion), and there are insanely compelling reasons to route for both of the women who are up for the part. This show belongs to Kat McPhee and Megan Hilty. The songs were changed from the script and feel relevant to the story. "Let Me Be Your Star" is far and away a better original number than any original song thus far on Glee. I don't think this is going to be a show all about "when are they gonna sing a song that I can download?" It just... it came together. It feels special. Hands down, my favorite screener so far. Cannot wait for this show. Hope it's a huge hit. Also hope they can somehow work it out that they only make a clean, crisp, 13-episode season every year that keeps the quality up to a cable standard (only having the 3 writers, and them writing 22 episodes a year, really screwed Glee up after those first 13 in Fall 2009).

- Wonder Woman: someone pass me the crow. I need to eat it. I feel like I was the only person on teh Interwebz who thought this might be, y'know, a viable show. I saw the potential camp in the script. The script needed help, lots of help. But it went from probably-awful with brief flashes of fun to a deadly dull, serious, pathos-laden drama. The only person who seemed to be having any fun was Liz Hurley, who was marvelous at chewing the scenery (while, inexplicably wearing the same dress in every scene despite being a huge CEO and the story taking place over multiple days). If everyone had the tone she brought to it, this show could've been something. I don't fault Palicki here, and hope she comes out of this unscathed because she did what she was asked. The whole Diana Prince side of her character made even less sense as filmed... we really needed a plot about Wonder Woman joining Facebook through her secret identity? You have to laugh at some of the production choices, too. The ridiculous grandstanding scene where Diana Themyscira verbally bitch-slaps THE UNITED STATES SENATE became a terse diatribe to a single Senator over wine at a Los Angeles fine dining establishment.

- Alcatraz: it's Fringe, with Jorge Garcia instead of Joshua Jackson (also: the old guy on the team that forms by the end isn't nearly as entertaining as Walter Bishop, and the cases available in series seem, at least on first blush, to be way too "the same old thing")! I kinda wish it had opened in the present day and just started with the weird mystery popping in the middle of nowhere, instead of the blandly atmospheric mystery-tinged horror film stuff that leads to the "all the prisoners and guards at Alcatraz have disappeared, where did they go?" question. It puts us way ahead of the characters... but, hey, it's the hook, so I understand frontloading it. Loved the first act, focusing on the first Alcatraz prisoner who reappears in the present day. Then act two starts on Sarah Jones and the show, depressingly, becomes a straight procedural until she's sucked into the mystery, and all I wanted to was go back to the criminal.

- Exit Strategy: action movie adrenaline junkie procedural? Something goes wrong on a CIA mission and the team is sent in to fix it and help assets escape a bad situation. Stock characters. It's being retooled, so we'll see what they do with it. If it stays mostly the same... why not have just picked up Human Target for another 13 episodes for an action hour (regardless of the ratings not justifying it)?

- Locke & Key: love, want more, I fear it's more of a miniseries than a 22-episode season, multiple season show and probably really expensive, so that's why it didn't go? Definitely has a "something weird is happening and I, as a human being, would be asking questions and demanding everyone pay attention to it, but it's a television show so meh!" to it. Fingers crossed someone swoops in to pick it up as, perhaps, a 6-hour SyFy mini?

Not yet watched: Touch (it hasn't been filmed... quite liked the feeling I got from the script, though I haven't done a review... but also very concerned with the Tim Kring of it all, having been burned on a worldwide-scope, massive ensemble with intersecting lives, heavily serialized show from him in Heroes)

Pilot Screener Reviewlets - CBS Dramas

- The 2-2: so not my cup of tea, and doesn't succeed on a "CBS procedural" level, either. A headscratcher of a pick up in my book. Slight serialization to it, not sexy, not unique, and not a "everyone focus on solving one murder." Shrug. Reminds me of ABC's The Unusuals, only that had an infectious sense of silliness going for it (oh, and Adam Goldberg in common...)

- A Gifted Man: the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is playing down from what they could be doing elsewhere in this. I mean... what is Margo Martindale doing following up her amazing stint on Justified as Patrick Wilson's semi-sassy secretary!?

- Hail Mary: the hilariousness of Sandra Bullock's character from The Blind Side partnering with a wise-cracking ex-gangbanger to become a PI team needed to be turned up to 11. Feels really odd that their so successful on such an easy case, yet the police are hapless. Only on TV...

- Person of Interest: So, Michael Emerson is kind of playing Ben... with a limp. Everything he says is needlessly mysterious and creepy. Hey, he's got a niche. The concept is that his character is provided with numbers - social security numbers - that a Big Brother-type machine (that can see you through every camera anywhere and can hear your phone conversations and knows who you are) he designed post 9/11 for the government considers irrelevant (as far as massive terrorist type activities), but are actually tips that something criminal is going to go down. The number could be that of a perpetrator, an accomplice, a victim... he doesn't know. He just gets the numbers (through a backdoor he designed... claiming that getting any more information that this would tip someone off). It's an interesting way into a procedural, that will provide plenty of "we thought it was this, but it's actually this... oh wait, we were wrong again!" twists. But part of me wishes that the information, which for much of the pilot is mysterious and seemingly beamed down to Michael Emerson from on high, or aliens, or magic, or something, had remained mysterious. But the other part of me is glad that the series is NOT about the mystery of how he gets the information. That's out of the way, so now it's just investigation, investigation, investigation. I could give or take Caviezel as the shadowy/traumatic-past field operative who gets recruited to be Emerson's primary investigator. Could be something I'm hooked into... could be something that's exactly the same every week and I decide isn't worth my time.

- Unforgettable: oh, my, do I have to swallow my pride on this one. This is almost a perfect CBS procedural and I'm guessing it's going to be the biggest hit of the fall season (though I still won't be watching). Some of the things I hated about the script (the five minutes in the beginning in a NYC cab that, for some reason, only had nostalgic radio stations on it that sent the lead character into uncontrollable flashback memories) are gone. Probably for production reasons, some of the described coolness of Carrie's memory flashes are gone (she could only pop back to what was in her field of vision, everything else was black, the edges were fuzzy), too, which is unfortunate because she is now, like, an infallible superwoman with almost 360 degrees of picture-and-sound-perfect memory. It might have been hard to explain to viewers, too. There's still a bunch of eye-rolling moments in breaking the case, but, whatever.

One of the show's two biggest challenges going forward is going to be bringing the other characters up from a peanut gallery position. Even Dylan Walsh's character, Al, who will be Carrie's partner, seems like little more than someone to talk to. He needs something about him that helps solve murders, so every beat doesn't hinge on something Carrie remembers. Otherwise, yeah, she's superwoman. I think we're supposed to feel a big UST thing between Carrie and Al. Not there, yet. The show's other biggest challenge is going to be explaining how Carrie's abilities help when she ISN'T at/around the scene of the crime when it happens / doesn't have even a little history with the victim. I like Poppy Montgomery as a redhead, but she slips out of her accent on several occasions.

Pilot Screener Reviewlets - ABC Dramas

- Charlie's Angels: totally sold on it, until Minka Kelly shows up? Still, probably has the best chance at succeeding of ABC's fall dramas. Very slick.

- Good Christian Belles: wasn't in love with the script, a bunch of changes made, and some good casting choices in the supporting roles. Very much in the cotton-candy dramedy vein. Not sure I love Leslie Bibb. Still feels like a bunch of sanctimonious hypocrites gossiping about the same thing for 42 minutes at times (honestly, there are soooo many intercut scenes of bitches on phones) and very little... doing anything. But I could see this being fun.

- Hallelujah: didn't read the script. Of the religion-imbued dramas, ABC clearly picked the right one going with GCB. The whole of Hallelujah feels... silly.

- Once Upon A Time: my issues with the script stand on both a story logic and "why do we care?" level, plays really slowly, stuff in fairytale world is pretty damn awesomely rendered, but, again, not sure why anyone's gonna care.

- Pan Am: as with the script... I'd watch a show about a 1960s stewardess-slash-spy. Unfortunately, that's maybe 1/10th of what this show is. The flashbacks are needless, except to get us off the damn claustrophobic plane and attempt to tells us who the girls are... which feels like a narrative cheat to me. The whole opening 12 minutes are incredibly sluggish and I suspect a ton of instant tune-out. Tonally, feels like it's playing on the romance of it all and wants to recapture the magic of Titanic... but doesn't. It's not like the plane is going to crash into an iceberg and we know that going in and then this crazy epic love story unfolds. It's all atmosphere. B-o-r-i-n-g.

- Partners: held off reading the script because of the nutso logline, and it wasn't picked up, so I still didn't. Special Agent Renee from 24 was pretty decent, but I think that's because I liked her from 24. Meh, no big loss it won't see the light of day.

- Poe: was distracted by Chris Egan with brown hair and Natalie Dormer as a blonde. It didn't sound much like dialogue in a period piece, played very "quippy TV crime solvers." I probably would've watched, but would have turned off after three episodes when every one came down to the X-Files question of "is it the supernatural or something crazy but real world" and never coming down on one side or the other.

- The Revenge: loved the script, lots left on the cutting room floor to get it down to time and, unfortunately, I don't think it works... I wouldn't have known what was happening if I hadn't read the script

- Scandal: (SPOILER ALERT) The explanation of what the crisis management firm does is a little clunky and I didn't care much for the new addition to the team. Not sure audiences will like not having an answer on the murder, but I'm happy, as I was in script, that the team (who are not homicide detectives) don't solve it. Might develop into something of an interesting character/team-cedural down the line. The thing the first case hinges on is a little obvious, and I felt that way in the script, too. The whole affair with the President thing really puts a sour light on the lead character, IMO.

... hey, ya'll! I haven't been posting much. Have you noticed?

Crazy busy. Trying to write a book. Haven't written prose, I feel, since some time around second grade. Hard to pick my head up out of it twice a day to look at final ratings, let alone post them. So... this summer may be a pretty quiet one here.

In the meantime, I've been watching a bunch of pilots, both picked up and busted. Here's the problem: I kind of dislike almost all of them, but don't feel that strongly. Writing glowing reviews is a breeze because I wanna share the love. Writing reviews where I absolutely, 100% can't stand something? Easy because it's, like, a giant rant and those are fun.

Writing a middling review about something I don't really care one way or the other about, made worse because it leans a little to the "bad / uninspired" side?

Impossible. And would take me into a the whole "OMG TRAVIS WHY ARE YOU WASTING YOUR TIME AND NOT WRITING YOUR BOOK" self-hate/death spiral, which is sooooo good for the already unfamiliar, uncharted personal creative zone that is prose writing.

So, I'm gonna be doing a review dump over the next couple hours with my quick take on everything I've watched. Just so it's off my chest. Stay tuned...

Pilot Script Review - Weekends at Bellevue

Apologies, this is the first script review from this season that I read and didn't almost-immediately do a write up. It's been a while, so details are fuzzy and I'm trying to look over the script again to make sure I'm not misrepresenting it.

The short of my opinion is that I just didn't care for it on the page. I know several people who are big fans of this script, so I've been scratching my head thinking "what are they reading/seeing that I'm not?" Part of it might be casting. As I've said before... I try my best to not pay any attention to that until I actually get to see the pilot screener.

This show exists somewhere in between House and Grey's Anatomy. Very much a character piece for the lead, Ellie Harlow, a doctor with a dark past and issues of her own still to deal with (which are vaguely suicidal), and a hospital-set ensemble-soap. The title says what we'll be watching... the weekend shift at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, replete with hospital bureaucracy and checkered emotional baggage between characters.

From a medical case perspective, the show insists that anything and everything will be fair game. "Mental illness is everywhere, in every specialty. When you’re a psychiatrist, absolutely everyone needs you." People have different tactics, of course, and will butt heads.

At least, here, with (several of) the characters actually being psychiatrists, it won't be so odd to see them psycho-analyze each other on a regular basis (COUGH House COUGH).

There was a very confusing thing the script did in playing with time. Ellie jumps off a moving yacht in the East River in the opening (in the present) and it's kinda-sorta connected to an incident 9 years prior when she fell from a boat in Lake Michigan and almost died in the wake of not being able to deal with the suicide of her mother. It eventually connects, but I swear, when the Lake Michigan / flashback part appeared about 25 pages in, I was thrown and had to look back (several times) to see if I'd missed something.

I think my issue with this show is, simply, that it feels done to death already and I'm not convinced I want to tune back in to see Ellie's misadventures with the rest of the Bellevue gang. The only vaguely new aspect to it, versus Grey's or House (which, despite declines in popularity over time, are still the two biggest medical shows currently on TV), is the focus on psychiatry... but we've seen psychiatrists on TV for a long, long time, both in emergency medicine context and in personal therapy sessions.

So, shrug. Again, this script has fans (at least in my personal circle). So, I reserve the right, as always, to change my opinion when I see how it filmed. As I've said before, I like being the one who had the lack of vision instead of being the one who was right that something wasn't good. I'd rather there be more good television than be right about an old version of a script.

Pilot Script Review - Charlie's Angels

Good morning, Angels.

In what seems to be a more-CW-esque move, ABC is rebooting iconic 70s series Charlie's Angels, this time with a multi-ethnic cast.

Yes, they're still PIs. Yes, they work for the Townsend Agency. Yes, one of them is still captured and the other two have to save her.

Oh, and Bosley isn't frumpy (I mean... upside-down crunches in gravity boots? Really, Bos?) Oh, and this time around, we the audience actually get to see Charlie (the Angels, of course, don't). Oh, and instead of three female cops quitting the force and being private investigators because they were annoyed with the crap work they were being given instead of actually solving crimes... we have three kinda-damaged women with different skill sets who Charlie has plucked out of misfortune and has given a second chance to.

Also, the show is now set in Miami instead of Los Angeles.

C'mon, you know what this format is about. Hot chicks kicking ass and taking names. Always has been, always will be. And, as a piece of escapist fantasy girl power fun? I kinda adore it. This is definitely going to be one of those pilot screeners I'm looking forward to, not because it's going to change my world, but because it's going to be a slick, glitzy ride to eat popcorn while watching. Even though the story does make a couple attempts to have pathos, mostly this is just a fun action hour, replete with over the top action heroine one liners.

The case of the pilot revolves around a villain named Pajaro and human trafficking. Turns out, Pajaro has a connection to one of our three Angels. And that connection... GETS HER KILLED.

Naturally, she's replaced by episode's end with a slightly more badass version of herself so the Angels are still a threesome and still just as multi-ethnic.

The Angels (per Charlie's voiceover in the opening moments as we see each in action... and then their mugshots):

- Gloria (Latina). "A Miami street racer turned gang member."
- Kate (Black). "A decorated police detective turned dirty cop."

The "replacement" is Marisa (guess the ethnicity... since I'm choosing not to spoil who is killed), a dishonorably discharged Marine.

Reboots of former TV shows, even those that have lasted more than one season, seem to open big and quickly cool off. I gotta imagine this one is going to make the Fall 2011 schedule, unless there are big production snafus. Even if it's mindless, it'll still be mindless, sexy fun. Again, I'm not saying this was the best script ever, but you don't judge mindless sexy fun on the same playing field as, say, Breaking Bad.

I didn't dislike the script for this project so much as I found the arena overly-trodden. This is gonna be a short review, because it's just a gut reaction. Everything could change when I see it on screen, but... haven't we been here before? How many times is the "sophisticated city girl goes to a quirky/charming Midwestern or Southern town" thing going to be developed?

Now, to be fair, I think there is quite a bit of charm and several heapfuls of soap in this script. Once the lead character, Zoe Hart, gets to BlueBell, Alabama (after flashing back to the setup-y why of it all... she's passed over for a fellowship position at the most prestigious Manhattan hospital because she has terrible bedside manner... oh, and also her best friend got the position and is now engaged to her ex-boyfriend), she almost immediately picks up two potential suitors, one of whom it turns out is engaged to the daughter of the man who is most interested in getting Zoe to leave BlueBell.

Years ago, Zoe was offered a job by a nice man who heard her speak at her med school graduation and he has hounded her with postcards every month since... so she finally accepts because, apparently, there are no jobs for extremely skilled but impersonal doctors anywhere in America. Which... I don't buy. But whatever. When she gets to BlueBell, it turns out the man has passed away, but left her his half of the only medical practice in town. Brick Breeland, the other owner and, until Zoe's arrival, the town's only remaining doctor, wants her out because he wants the practice all to himself. And thus a rivalry is formed.

We get the usual moments of City Girl in the Country. We get quirky characters. We even get people referring to themselves in the third person. It really just feels like a been-there-done-that, the only slight change to the trope is that our City Girl is a highly skilled surgeon. I know this script will have its fans. I suppose it's just not my cup of sweet tea on the page.

Game of Thrones Week 2 Review - The Kingsroad

I'm starting to remember why I stopped doing weekly reviews of things airing on television. Not because I didn't enjoy this episode of Game of Thrones (in fact, I was very happy that the pace was WAY up versus the necessarily slow and set-up-y pilot), but because, well, you have two options in reviews. You can do a recap (which is what most weekly "reviews" are) or you can do something a little more literary, discuss theme, character, etc. A lot of television wears theme on its sleeve (or announces it via voiceover).

If week one of Game of Thrones was about loyalty, then this week was about duty. It wasn't a question of "will you go" (Ned, becoming the Hand of the King, Dany becoming Drogo's wife) but a question of "how far will you go?" It's a question that, in a way, began with Jaime throwing Bran from the tower window at the end of the pilot. "The things I do for love."

While my favorite scene in the episode was the illuminating, riddled with undercurrents breakfast between the Lannisters (okay, it was really Tyrion slapping the crap out of Joffrey), I felt this episode really served to highlight the Stark women, who were all underserved in the loaded pilot. We saw new colors to Catelyn, Sansa, and Arya.

Catelyn, the mourning mother, hasn't left her sick son's side in a month (time is just flying in every episode of this show). But when she fends off an assassin's attempt on comatose Bran's life (with a serious assist from Summer, Bran's direwolf... so cute), she is activated and must leave Winterfell to warn her husband. The treachery hinted at in her sister's letter is certainly afoot. And she reminds eldest son Robb of his duty: there must always be a Stark in Winterfell. I forgot to note this last week... but how gorgeous is the weirwood tree in the godswood at Winterfell?

Sansa wishes to live in a Disney movie. Unfortunately, she lives in Westeros. Arya seems much more aware of this. So, when Sansa goes on a stroll with "her Prince" Joffrey (he of getting the shit slapped out of him) and he challenges the butcher's boy practicing swordplay with Arya to a duel... Joffrey using a sword and Mycah using a wooden stick. Arya intercedes and Joffrey threatens to kill her, but Arya is saved by Nymeria, her direwolf. Arya throws Joffrey's sword into the river, then, knowing Nymeria will be killed because she injured the King's son, chases her pet direwolf off (and doesn't it seem as if these direwolves have a duty to protect their Starks). Arya is brought before the King and it's a case of he said she said. Sansa is called as witness, but claims ignorance, to Arya's protests. Duty. Did Sansa pass the test? Or fail it? This is a world where family and clan is everything and she's just betrayed her sister... to become Queen. I think we will judge Sansa for her actions, but they're completely understandable.

King Robert has no idea who to believe, his son or the daughter of his new Hand. It's massively complicated given the political ties Robert is trying to forge by marrying Joffrey and Sansa... and he balks. Ned is grateful, but Cersei seems to be aware of the politics at play and demands her husband do something about their son's injury. It's subtle leverage and it works as the King declares that the remaining direwolf, Sansa's Lady, will die. Lady, who we have seen all of once in the scene where she is well-behaved and walking through the party before Sansa goes on the fateful walk with Joffrey. Sansa may have lied, may have had her reasons... and they have already come back to haunt her.

Here is where Arya shows her true colors and just how awesome she is (besides, y'know, whacking Joffrey with a stick - I guess hitting Joffrey was a motif in this episode): she comes to Lady's, and thereby Sansa's, defense. Lady didn't do anything. She doesn't deserve death.

But the King has spoken. And Ned insists on being the one to do it. It's his duty, and echoes what he told Bran in the first episode: "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword." Robert, clearly, does not subscribe to this, but Ned feels it is his duty and we see the great pain he takes in killing Lady, realizing just what a Devil's bargain he has made in agreeing to become Robert's Hand.

Elsewhere, Jon Snow and Tyrion discuss the duty of the Night's Watch... what are they protecting Westeros from beyond the Wall? Tyrion, an intelligent dwarf, does not believe what we saw in the opening minutes of the pilot... that there are true horrors beyond the Wall. It's the stuff of legends and myth for Tyrion.

Elsewhere, still, Dany learns a valuable lesson in how to do her duty better as Khal Drogo's wife from a handmaiden named Doreah who was sold to a brothel at age 9. But it's okay, because she spent three years learning how to please men before actually having to do it at age 12. Here's hoping Dany will be able to walk without help soon now that she's looking on Drogo's eyes.

I'm honestly not sure what's more disturbing... Ned's killing of Lady (which was off screen!) or the imagery of Drogo and Dany. Either Jason Momoa is a very, very large man or if Emilia Clarke is very, very small or some combination of the two or there is film magic going on because it really, really does take on the look of a man having sex with a child. Which, y'know, that's the story so okay. But, whew, it's another thing to look at it.
