Top Chef All-Stars Premiere

TOP CHEF IS BACK, READERS.

Quick spoiler alert / spoiler space for anyone who hasn't read through Book Two of The Hunger Games (I swear to G-d, there's a reason). Don't worry, there'll be another spoiler space after that brief discussion in case you want to skip right after to the Top Chef discussion minus my tangent into literature and analogy and so for.

So, in book two of The Hunger Games, about halfway through, Katniss Everdeen is called back to The Hunger Games for the "Quarter Quell," a special event that occurs in Panem every 25 years. This time: the male/female tributes from each of the 12 districts in Panem are "reaped" from the pool of victors instead of from the total population pool of 12-17 year old teenage boys and girls.

It's The Hunger Games All-Stars.

And as soon as it's announced, the book picks up after lagging for a while on the laurels of HOLY SHIT THE FIRST BOOK WAS AMAZING WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!?

I feel like that's what happened with Top Chef last night, after a truly lackluster 7th season and a 6th season that was really only a battle between four people anyway. Forget Top Chef Masters (fun, but frivolous and without real stakes) and Top Chef Just Desserts (which was colorful, sweet confectionery goodness, don't get me wrong).

Top Chef is back.

Top Chef is back, with characters we (the Constant Viewer) already know and love (or love to hate). And we already know that they're all incredibly talent chefs. We know their personalities (and are, in some cases, hoping for a change but secretly demanding that nothing has changed and that Marcel is just as much of a talented douchebag as ever). There's no culling to do, no trimming the fat. Normally in these competition shows, it takes weeks to whittle away the boring contestants, the ones who don't truly belong, the extraneous characters who get in the way of the real talent and magnetic personalities. Every cut is going to be painful instead of merely being necessary and a step towards the final group.

I've watched All-Stars editions of reality shows before (The Amazing Race... and it was a hoot... haven't watched either Survivor edition because, again, I've never been a Survivor viewer). This isn't the first time it's ever been done, obviously. But it feels different, to me, than other All-Stars casts.

Why? I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) this is the first time that a skills competition show has done an All-Stars season. There have been specials from both Top Chef and Project Runway with "All-Stars." But this is a whole season. And it's not a game that people are playing outside of their daily lives, taking a 40 day trip to the wilderness or jetsetting around the world. This isn't something these people are really doing for "fun." This is what these people do for their careers. The stakes are insanely high, personally and professionally. And it's something that, really, since each contestant's last time on the show, they had a real opportunity to improve. To become better, more multifaceted chefs.

Which is why the first elimination challenge (which, especially in Season 7 / DC, were more often poorly conceived than not) was so pitch-perfect. "Here's what sent you home last time. Now fix it."

And how devastating it must've been to be sent home first (and I must say I totally disagree with the decision, based on a cooking talent level... it should've been Stephen, but he's too colorful and annoying a character... but, yikes, if Elia didn't fully descale that fish and it was served partially raw... that's a problem!)

I cannot wait for the rest of this season. Especially after the "trick" the producers pulled on the contestants, splitting them first into seasons for the quickfire and then into two groups for the elimination and letting the chefs listen to the others critiquing their food in front of the judges. It's always a little weird when that happens because while the first group of diners in unaware they're being watched, the second group is all-too-aware.

Because the season really did risk being low on drama. And the beginning of the episode was (almost) all hugs. Sure, there were little spats that were going to develop... but now it's on, as every chef has vocally lambasted someone else's finished product (while praising others). Another reason Elia was probably eliminated. She wanted no part in that drama.

Congrats to Angelo for the win. It'll always have the asterisk of "if Blais finished on time, would he have won," but while you proved yourself awesome among lesser cheftestants in DC, you've now proven yourself awesome among the best. Even if not all of them had their finest day.

Who are you rooting for? Who are you rooting against? Who do you want to stay on so you can root against them?

My fingers are crossed this season's ratings are well above DC's because... damn, this show just got good again.

Hoodie MFing hoo, bitches.

Confession Time - Fashion TV

I watched America's Next Top Model this season.

I know. I know.

Haven't watched it in years (and to think that, 3.5 years ago, in the first year of the CW's existence, I was talking about it with EPs on job interviews... because they watched, too).

The change in the prizes definitely made me interested again. I seem to have been the only one, as the ratings for this cycle continued the downward trend ANTM has been on since Cycle 9. The show retained some of the cattiness of prior seasons, but some of the outright silliness was stripped away... which was a good thing. For me, anyway. I don't think the models were outright "better" this cycle than those I remembered back when I was watching regularly (hell, in the finale, both finalists were criticized for their runway walks). But seeing actually well-known photographers and designers was an improvement. I'd be back for another "elevated" season if they did one. After all... there's nothing really going on at 8pm on Wednesdays for me (I've never been a Survivor watcher and I only watch The Middle when people have told me about a particularly good episode).

I seem to have an addiction to fashion-based TV. Despite the changes since the move to Bunim/Murray and Lifetime, I'm still watching Project Runway (no, I will not opine about this season's finale... except to say that the casting process really needs to step it up and find contestant who are both interesting personalities and capable designers... it can't be that hard, can it?)

I'm actually loving this season of The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection. It was a PR knockoff in the first season and Kelly Rowland was snooze-worthy as a host. But Iman is pure gold (especially if one takes the Tom and Lorenzo approach of picturing every line she utters as if said by a supervillainess... which isn't a stretch by any means) and they figured out a way to cover up potential lulls in the drama by making every week a team challenge (which tend to be Project Runway's most "dramatic" episodes). The designs aren't anything groundbreaking, but they've found a few interesting characters. Anyone else watching? I realize, based on the cellar-dweller ratings, you may not be. With the networks going into rerun mode / winter hibernation, you should take an hour to check it out.

Currently putting together a small blog on last night's Top Chef All-Stars premiere. Look for it later today :D

FAQ Time

I'm in the process of learning a couple things since starting to put the final ratings on this blog (specifically, cable) so figured it was time for a little informational / FAQ / disclaimer-ish post.

1) I only get ratings for prime time (8-11pm Mon-Sat, 7-11pm Sun). So, if something airs at 7pm and ends by 7:30pm on Wednesday... I don't have the info. Sorry! However if something, for some reason, aired from 7pm to 8:01pm... I will have it. Yes, if even a minute of a program airs during the prime time, and I get info for that network, I will have the ratings.

2) For cable, I only get full program ratings, so I can't give 15 minute breakdowns.

3) For broadcast, I do get 15 minute breakdowns... but it's a little time intensive and, in general, not that interesting/informative (if something has a big hit lead-in and the lead-out's average is down from that lead-in... you can bet the first 15 minutes are the highest rated and it's downhill from there). I try to post 15 minute breakdowns for series premieres or, for certain special shows that I have a particular ratings interest, the season premieres (i.e. Idol, Glee). Again... it takes time that I sadly don't have.

4) I am not aware of all cable series or what airs when/where/etc. But if you are, and I've missed something / not included something in my posts... please continue to let me know via comment requests or replying to @travisyanan on Twitter. When you do that, please tell me both the network the show airs on and the time.

5) I am more than happy to fill specific requests for ratings info for original airings. Why for original airings only? Posting rerun ratings (unless I've accidentally confused a rerun's ratings with an original... it does happen) is a problem for me because while I get a lot of ratings info for cable, see above, re time. It's a slippery slope, posting rerun ratings for a request to being expected to post every single data point I get for every airing in prime time. Or at least I see it as such. So I'm just not willing to start down that path.

6) Similarly, if there is a specific demographic that you'd like to see info on... I'm happy to comply. But please tell me why. I don't know, outside of press releases, what specific networks target. I currently post K2-11 for Cartoon Network shows, T12-17 and K2-11 for Disney Channel and Nickelodeon shows, W18-34 and T12-17 for ABC Family shows, W18-34 for MTV shows, and M18-34 for South Park (and whatever is leading out of it) because I know those are targets.

7) Unless there is a presidential speech or some big event (i.e. the election), I don't post cable news numbers. TVbytheNumbers.com does a fantastic job with those with data I don't get (the 35-64 demo) and, frankly, I've looked at the comment stream there and I'm not interested in getting a bunch of comments every day about how Rachel Maddow is a lesbian vampire or Bill O'Reilly is a racist douchebag.

8) I don't get/post Saturday ratings unless I'm aware of a special event.

Thanks for reading and commenting!
